Installing and Configuring Windows Server 2012 R2 in core mode
In this post we are going to install server 2012 r2 in core mode for step by step installation of server 2012 in GUI mode please see this post. Installation process of GUI and core is same at the time of installation we have to select server core installation for installing and configuring windows server 2012 R2 in core mode steps are given below.
First insert Server 2012 r2 DVD in to dvd rom boot from dvd and at the time of installation select server core installation see screenshot given below
When server 2012 r2 installation complete change administrator password
When you login in server 2012 r2 you see only command prompt. There is no start menu in core installation if you are unable to see command promt you can manualy open it by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del then open task manager click on file then run then type CMD to open command prompt.
Change Host Name
To change hostname frst run command hostname to see the hostname. For changing hostname run command netdomrenamecomputer<ComputerName>/NewName:<NewComputerName>
Then restart your server to do this run command shutdown /r /t 0
Set static IP address
netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces
Write down the number show on idx column then run command
netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”<ID>” source=static address=<StaticIP> mask=<SubnetMask> gateway=<DefaultGateway>
ID is the number shown on IDX
To add DNS run command
netsh interface ipv4 add dnsserver name=”<ID>” address=<DNSIP>index=1
DNSIP is the IP of DNS server
Then run command ipconfig to check ip address
For joining domain run command
netdom join <ComputerName> /domain:<DomainName> /userd:<UserName> /passwordd:*
When prompt for password type password then restart your server
Server 2012 r2 is configured you can also use sconfig utility to do these steps this is very simple utiliy to run this command go to command prompt and run command sconfig. Follow the instructions you see on screen.
