Installing an Additional Domain Controller using IFM

In previous post we have discuss on windows server backup tools in backup tools we created IFM using NTDSUTIL now In this post we are going to configure ADC using IFM You can install Additional domain controller by installing active directory domain services or by running DCPROMO command you can do it with two methods direct install ADC or installing an additional domain controller using IFM installing ADC using IFM decrease your replication traffic you can use this method for installing ADC on remote site or sites with low bandwidth you can also create as many domain controllers you want to create with this single IFM

For installing an additional domain controller using IFM you have to create IFM(install from media) first then we create ADC using that IFM I have one domain controller already installed domain name thetechnosolution.com now we are going to install ADC follow steps given below.

Creating Install From Media Server 2008

Open command prompt with admin privileges run command ntdsutil

Then run command Active instance ntds

Run Ifm

Type ? and hit enter

You can see all available options with IFM command

NTDSUTIL

Run command Create Sysvol Full E:\IFM (Here E is the path where we save IFM)IFM starts creating snapshot

When IFM media created you got a message IFM media created successfully

IFM created successfully now we are going to installing an additional domain controller using IFM follow steps given below

Open Server manager click on add roles to add role at before you begin screen click next

At select server roles window select Active directory domain services role and click next

At active directory domain services window click next

On confirm installation selections check and confirm your selection after that click on install to install role

When installation complete you got message installation succeeded with installed role information in this screeshot you will see one warning i.e because of automatic update is not enabled so ignore it and click on close to continue

Active directory domain services role was installed now run dcpromo command to creating additional domain controller

At welcome wizard click on use advance mode installation then click next

On operating system compatibility click next

At choose a deployment configuration window select existing forest then select add a domain controller to an existing domain

Specify account credentials to install active directory

Select domain click next

Select your site then click next

At additional domain controller options window select additional options I had unchecked global catalog for this domain controller click next

We had unchecked global catalog that’s why we see this message infrastructure master configuration conflict click on transfer the infrastructure master role to this domain controller to transfer infrastructure role

Click yes to continue installation

This is step is very important for installing an additional domain controller using IFM

From install from media window select location where you have IFM(You can not select network location copy IFM on local hard drive) then click next

Choose domain controller if more than one or select option let the wizard choose an appropriate domain controller

Select path or leave it default then click next

Type active directory restore mode password then click next

When installation complete click on finish

Open active directory go to domain controller you can see your new additional domain controller in active directory

Your additional domain controller is created
